Council Idea

Minimise the Urban Heat Island Effect*/ Maximise canopy cover and urban greenery

* refers to the way built up areas trap heat. It results from a lot of activity in the one area and from the dense, dark and solid surfaces, such as concrete and asphalt, in urban environments which absorb heat. These surfaces absorb heat during the day, then release the heat overnight, resulting in higher overall temperatures.

Council Idea

Increase urban agriculture and local food production - exploring food growing opportunities such as planting fruit bearing street trees or community gardens; providing information about growing food at home; facilitating networking between individuals and groups; sharing resources where possible.

Continue to reduce waste into landfill by increasing recycling and composting opportunities – continuation and improvement of the existing service.

Apparently Darebin Council piloted a program last year to install solar panels for low income households that the households pay for slowly over time as part of their power bills. If the residents sell, the program/cost stays with the property. Some other councils, such as Adelaide City Council, are now adopting this (installations in Adelaide will start in June/July), and it seems this approach matches the ethos of Moreland. One of the challenges would be how to make this available to renters, however with the Andrews government about to introduce long term leases, there may be opportunities.

Council Idea

Reduce environmental hazards from rubbish dumping - working to reduce issues like asbestos dumping, chemicals, building materials and the dumping of household items like batteries, mobile phones, fluorescent lights, that need to be taken to appropriate drop off points.

More tree planting along footpaths and in verges. There is limited shade in many streets in Coburg. Either inappropriate trees, dead trees, new trees are too immature most of the time. More plane trees like the leafy eastern suburbs they seem to be maintained fine over there!!

Encourage community use of the Upfield bike path along the trainline through planting trees/garden beds and installation of community art/sculpture. E.g. involve local schools/multicultural/sports/arts groups to contribute to a pathway that increases sense of ownership and celebrates Moreland's diversity.

Improve energy efficiency to reduce costs and climate change impact (such as solar panels and LED lighting) – employing a range of energy efficiencies to produce cost savings.
