The latest study has come back showing that mobile phones do cause cancer. There are also studies showing that mobile phones cause massive amounts of DNA damage which will result in deformities in the next generation of children. Many people do not even know that mobile phones emit microwaves. Isn't it time the government took some steps to protect the health of Australians from microwave exposure, such as turning the mobile phone towers off at night?

Radiofrequency radiation, which includes the microwave portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, was classified as a Group 2B Possible Carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organisation, in 2011 (see IARC Monograph 102). This means that exposure to the radiation may promote cancer. A number of scientists who were originally involved in this process say that there is now sufficient scientific evidence to tighten the classification still further: Professor Dariusz Leszczynski and Dr. Anthony B. Miller both support tightening it to Group 2A Probably Carcinogenic to humans, whilst Dr Lennart Hardell argues for a classification of Group 1 Carcinogenic to humans. 207 scientists from 40 countries who study the link between electromagnetic radiation and health, have recently written to the United Nations, all UN member states, and the World Health Organisation, warning of the known health risks associated with the proliferation of wireless technologies taking place. Between them, they have written more than 2000 research papers and studies on the health effects of this radiation. This is taken from the Appeal description: "The International EMF Scientist Appeal asks the Secretary General and UN affiliated bodies to encourage precautionary measures, to limit EMF exposures, and to educate the public about health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women." Professor Martin Pall has recently released a paper* in which he describes how the non-ionising radiation exposure levels set by organisations such as ICNIRP (International Commission for Non Ionising Radiation Protection) are meaningless and do nothing to protect our health, as they are based on a completely false premise. This false premise? The idea, highly convenient to the business interests, that the only harm that this radiation can cause is if it heats body tissues. However, there are many thousands of scientific studies which demonstrate harm well below the supposedly "safe" non-ionising radiation thresholds. The BioInitiative Report 2007/2012 was a peer-reviewed analysis of thousands of scientific studies which examined the link between non-ionising radiation and health effects. This is taken from the conclusion of the 2012 report: "Bioeffects are clearly established and occur at very low levels of exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation. Bioeffects can occur in the first few minutes at levels associated with cell and cordless phone use. Bioeffects can also occur from just minutes of exposure to mobile phone masts (cell towers), WI-FI, and wireless utility ‘smart’ meters that produce whole-body exposure. Chronic base station level exposures can result in illness." Dr Leif Salford's work has shown how exposure to microwave radiation causes a degradation in the blood-brain barrier, and worryingly, he discovered that this effect was more pronounced at lower power outputs (i.e. that there exist "biological windows" of harm). Professor Trevor Marshall recently gave a presentation at the 5th International Symposium on the "Interaction of Nervous and Immune Systems in Health and Disease", in which he noted that "Radio Waves Make You Sicker". He showed how the human body is affected by exquisitely low power outputs, and how exposure to this radiation makes existing disease symptoms even worse. Finally, earlier this year France enacted precautionary EMF legislation, part of which outlawed children of under 3 from being exposed to wi-fi radiation in nurseries and other meeting places, and which restricted the time that older children can be exposed to wi-fi radiation. The radiation emitted by wireless devices of all types - cellphones, cell towers, Wi-Fi, "smart" meters, Bluetooth devices, DECT cordless phones and so on - is biologically harmful, and is especially damaging to children and pregnant women. It's time for this issue to be openly discussed, and for urgent action to be taken.
