How can customers help Central Highlands Water improve water quality?

Forum closing on 31 March 2017 / 05:00 PM (2 days left)

Since August last year we asked our customers to rate our performance as a service provider. We collected feedback from over 1000 customers - across the entire region we serve. We heard from everyone from Amphitheatre to Golden Point.

Water Quality is by far, the greatest area of improvement we can make. Overall, you rated water quality a 7.1 out of 10. Sometimes it smells and tastes funny. The quality can vary from location and from day to day. Sometimes customers gave us a 10 out of 10. Sometimes a 1 out of 10.

It is also an area where the gap between our performance and your expectation is greatest.

To that end, we now want to start exploring solutions with you. We have some ideas, but would value yours too.

How can customers help Central Highlands Water improve water quality?

We will also be holding a community forum on the 1st of April from 10am-2pm in Ballarat Central. Please click the relevant link on the right section of this page to register. Details will be confirmed upon registration.

Real time monitoring of critical water quality (aesthetics) points in the distribution system with push communications (SMS) in localised areas when the water quality moves outside of various water quality parameters.

Could also use this communication approach if there are other elements that impact water quality - ie burst water main, change in water direction flow due to switching or fault repair, activities that may impact water and pressure ie routine maintenance - planned and unplanned works or change in raw water sources.

If there was an easy way for us to report water quality specifically and see how it's tracking across the region

We live in Argyle Cres Alfredton and it is hard for me to pass comments on this subject as since the tank and system on the golf course has been in operation (maybe that's why) our water has been totally acceptable. We do also run 13,500ltrs of rainwater for everything on the block and regularly switch from one to the other, not noticing any big difference.
I am very happy to conduct any monitoring of the town water supply but other than taste and colour it is hard without equipment. We are happy with it as it comes at present.
We are rather concerned seeing all the new land development...

In the 7 years I have lived in Waubra, I have never hada decent water supply. The water is generally foul, or excessively chlorinated
and has high salt content. Last year the salty water killed most of my citrus trees and my vegetables garden.
I have never seen CHW do anything other than to send out bills, and ignore our water problems. On one occasion when I rang to complain, I was told "It's shit water, we know - get over it!"
My solution is to forget about conventional desalination with all its expense, Instead I think that Ionisation of the water is a much better idea. Ballarat Gol...

Clean the rivers and water ways of rubbish and weeds. Improve the quality of the water by keeping it clean

I wish to know whether the Avoca Water Treatment Plant is still being managed by Veolia? And if so, are they are using the desalination plant as we were told it was intended at installation? They are a global profit-oriented corporation, more interested in their own bottom line than in the well-being of Avoca water users, and running the de-sal plant would be costing them money, so they are probably not using it. This is possibly one reason for the variation in taste of the water from day to day.

Fluoride in our water. Current world thoughts and studies are saying this should not be in our water. Given that these studies world wide are giving negative reports and about the harm it causes, not to mention its classification as a poison.l would like to know where that leaves the water boards that dispose of fluoride in our water, all in the presumption that it helps our teeth which is also being debunked, Ballarat included. I'm sure you at the board must be aware of these studies and where does that leave you if people take legal action. As it will be the people that bails the board out, may...

Living in Amphitheatre water from our reservoir has always been an issue since moving here 24 years ago. I know we have had droughts and less rain over this time but our reservoir has been filled a number of times. The water here is disgusting. It is either smelly(of rottern fish), cloudy, dirty, just plain unusable. I have complained a number of times over many years. yes the pipes are flushed but its not fixing the problem. We are told our water is at a reduced price( don't know if that's true) because of the condition you come and shower in it wash your children in it, wash your clothes...

Community forums in local areas would be helpful, to have one in central Ballarat is not particularly accessible. Maryborough could be a good venue, a current program to increase drinking of water is being subjected to ridicule because of the undrinkable quality of town water.

I have installed a filter on my drinking water kitchen tap: you could bulk buy filters and sell them to customers at cost price, adding the costs to water bills.
