The dredging of Gladstone harbor has created an environmental disaster. no one in the area will eat the fish, and much of the marine life there is dying. Why is it that the Queensland government can see that this is happening, yet does not stop the expansion of this dredging, even when many local people have openly stated that if it continues the great barrier reef will be threatened, and the UN is reviewing the dredging, while looking at removing the world heritage status?

I learnt about this via another piece of quality investigative journalism by the ABC. This is a tragedy. everyone can see it except govt. the local fisheries folk have verified the disaster is unfolding and nothing is being done about it.

Her answer will be Jobs... The mining industry employes relative few people compared to the tourism industry and damaging the Barrier Reef will damage tourism, so maybe the real reason is mining taxes.
