“The ACTU is on the record as strongly supporting government subsidies to industries that have been adversely impacted by the high Australian Dollar, most notably for manufacturing. You have clearly stated that these subsidies should be aimed at retaining such industries in their current form for the duration of the high dollar. Given most economists predict that the Australian Dollar will remain high over the medium to long term, would it not be better to focus government support on assisting uncompetitive companies to transition into new industries, as well as retraining workers, with a view to creating efficient sustainable companies that can compete without tax-payer funded assistance?”
