Q&A - After The Budget - May 16th

OurSay is delighted to be cooperating with Q&A. One of the most popular questions on the OurSay site will be put to the panel on Q&A on the Monday after the federal budget on May 16th. Earlier this year, Q&A’s executive producer Peter McEvoy invited the OurSay team to collaborate on a pilot project. The teams discussed a number of ideas, and an exciting new formula was created. In the lead up to the federal budget episode, the Q&A audience can post and vote for questions they would like answered on the show. The Q&A team will choose one out of the top five questions to put to the panel on May 16th.

The Question

The day after the 2011 Budget reading the Attorney Generals Department sent an email to all qualified Celebrants informing them of the Introduction of a new "Professional Celebrant Fee". No details were given with exception to the start date. July 1 2013. A lot of commentary since the Budget reading has accused the Gillard Government of giving with one hand whilst taking with the other. The email from the AG Department states that this will be used to "cover costs associated with the regulation of Commonwealth marriage celebrants should be met by celebrants themselves, as with other professionals such as migration agents" Celebrants are NOT Migration agents and this is a very poor comparison - Is the Gillard Government now introducing a "Love" or "Marriage" Tax????
