Many Australians feel democracy has been hijacked by corporate lobbyists and that policymaking is driven by whatever vested interests have the biggest pockets to manipulate public opinion. Can anyone offer some practical wisdom on how democracy can be reclaimed by the people, for the people and so that it once again centres on what is best for our society in the long term?

The Pope recently urged Italians to be more compasionate of the asylum seekers fleeing Africa, given Tony Abbott's stringent beliefs, can we expect a coalition backflip on this issue?

Not as bad here YET as in the U.S. where Congress has devolved into a revolving door business (lobbyist donations to campaign, election, end of term joining the lobbying firm), buying votes for corporations saving them lots of money regulating their businesses but cost everyone on the planet money, health and democratic freedoms. We can't let it get that bad here. Corporate media/news needs to be challenged: policy NOT infotainment.

I believe that the power of the corporate lobbyists manipulating the government agenda could not be more evident in that the Government is making so many reversal of policy decisions over major issues. I did not vote for the "Lobbyist Party" at the last election.
