Are democracy and capitalism compatible? If not, how can we separate the two systems? Is there an alternate model of trade to the capitalist model?

I think this is a good talking point, in the context of the GFC and International Free Trade agreements. Interestingly, in the US commentators are now talking about "Ultra Capitalism" as opposed to everyday, run-of-the-mill capitalism. Personally, I think free trade agreements are rigged to benefit the US and the EU. What was the biggest benefit of Vale's kow-towing to the US on free trade (apart from his own lucrative post-parliament career) ? The deregulation of our dairy industry. How's that going ? Politicians often dissemble to a gullible populace about free trade when they really just mean trade. Case in point - China. The biggest trading partner of the US and Australia. Nothing "Free" about China.
