The marriage act is defined as the marriage between a man and a woman FOR LIFE! What part of 'for life' is not understood. To truly enforce the Act we would have to reinstate all first marriages. Just one example of how outdated the Act is. Get a grip Julia.

PM Gillard, can you please xplain why loving committed , lawful citizens have to be denied civil rights like civil marriage rights? ? Do you believe one can be half-equal or half-caste? Have you ever reflected on your duty to make justice like Kevin Rudd did to the aboriginals? We have been segregated and stigmatized for centuries here too. Please, spare me the talk that what KEVIN did in 2008 has enough... even UK and New Zealand had by then national civil unions...

Perhaps the questioner should phrase this in a way that appeals to Julia's legal side...For example...Rosa Parks had EQUAL rights to sit on the bus with white people...she merely had to "compromise" by giving up her seat if a white person needed it...So, in essence, allowing gay people civil union and not marriage equates to Rosa Parks fighting for a right that she did not deserve....true equality...

This is crap! The winning questions do deal with REAL issues that affect ALL of Australia. Only secular communities. It is ridicules that gays are still fighting for rights. If i was in charge of Australia this stupid question, and it is a stupid question, would never have to be asked because this would never happen! Then people would be asking me IMPORTANT questions that matter to everyone. Like the lack of infrastructure in Australia or a "well-fair"/tax system that works and can be understood by everyday people. For reference i'm straight and think since when did we become so institutionalized that some one else can dictate what right you get depending on your sexual preference? It makes you feel like we are all prisoners in our own country. Slowly by slowly we lose our right and nobody asks the people they just do it. Clever words and spin doctors reign supreme and some how out do intelligent logic and common sense. Imagine if the prime minister actually said this:- "Well gay union is not something I believe in but I work for the people and the people are telling me this is the world we live in, and we live in a free and liberated country so I will fight for all couples gay or no".
