“Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu supports voluntary euthanasia. So do the overwhelming majority of Victorians (and Australians across all States and Territories). Why isn't it law?”
I havent seen anyone sick enough to warrent it so i dont like to judge but i would like maybe some assurance that people make sure they are not making the decision to do this if there is room for perspective. For instance many people live decades with an incredible amount of chronic pain. I have chronic pain for over a decade an would rather live in pain than not live at all. However I think there would be diseases that caused "bad enough" pain that it may be a humane option
I have seen life and death in many forms, what is good for one person may not be for another, but I will fight for the freedom of every person to decide what is right for them when choosing to live or die. Feedom to choose should be without stigma, law breaking and undue suffering, to the person or those around them. The law must change evetualy if we accept that wanting to stop one's own suffering is not a criminal act.
Studies where VE is legal show that people actually live longer knowing that they have the availability of a painless death if their suffering becomes too difficult to deal with (for example http://www.abc.net.au/news/2010-12-07/legal-euthanasia-could-prolong-lives/2365638 ) Not only that, but people who aren't dying right now will live with a peace of mind knowing that their future isn't clouded with uncertainty and suffering.
I know this as I'm only 45 yet after cancer and a brain injury and brain tumour I know I'm at risk of cancer again, dementia again, stroke ....... and I live with horrific symptoms that will be made worse with the dementia again - like severe pain, horrible fatigue, horrific chronic hunger 24 hours a day ....... but if I knew that VE was available I wouldn't be worrying for the next 20+ years ........ I'd have nothing to fear about my future. Why can't the politicians listen?
If the pro life/anti euthanasia campaigners want to be martyrs and their last days to be agonizingly painful,it is THEIR choice.THEIR choice which should not be forced on me.I too want a CHOICE,a painless dignified passing and if I so desire with the help of PAD
Physician Assisted Dying
Individuals and communities alike should be in charge of their own destiny. It is part of the human condition to be faced with difficult choices, including at the end of life. People must be supported in making their own decisions, instead of having them imposed by members of powerful institutions for their own ideological agendas: ironically under the guise of 'care'.
Humans are being treated (not being treated) worse than animals. If an animal is suffering we put it down. If a person is suffering we insist to make them suffer for the rest of their lives
Parliamentarians are elected to REPRESENT their constituents, 85% of whom demand PAD (Physician Aided Dying). Therefore WHY the HELL are you NOT listening.
Given a conscience vote, be reminded YOUR conscience does not come into it. You are expected to represent the demands of your constituents.
Personally, I am sympathetic to voluntary euthanasia, but representative democracy does not mean government by opinion poll. We hold our elected representatives accountable for their overall performance every 3 or 4 years - not every 3 or 4 days according to the latest opinion poll.
